The Board Chairman of Stop TB Partnership Ghana David Kwesi Afreh has charged the government of Ghana to allocate 10% of the resources that was allocated to the fight against covid-19 annually. He made this call at a pre-implementation meeting of partners and stakeholders under the “Strengthening the TB Response through Multi-Stake Holder Partnerships” project in Accra on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

Mr. David Kwesi Afreh also wants the government to pay the same level of attention to the fight against TB as was done during the intensified fight against covid-19 in 2020 and 2021. The project is funded by Stop TB Partnership Global headquartered in Geneva Switzerland. Stop TB Partnership Ghana is one of the many countries in Africa that have won the second round of the project’s grand.

The umbrella body of partners in the fight against TB in Ghana is advocating taking TB to the highest of political agenda and attention in Ghana no matter the government in power.  As part of activities under the implementation of the project, the board chairman and his team are taking TB to parliament, other arms of government, and all government functionaries in Ghana.

Other key speakers at the meeting also called for concerted efforts and all hands on deck in the fight against TB in Ghana and beyond. On his part, the Vice Chairman of Stop TB Partnership Board in Geneva, Chief Austin Arinze Obiefuna called for increased advocacy for a TB vaccine in the shortest period as was quickly done for covid-19.

Mrs. Cecilia Lodonu-Senoo, Executive Director of Hope for Future Generations, observed that no country can achieve very good results without civil society. She added that countries that have made it have placed premium on civil society implementation and involvement.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Acting Executive Secretary of Stop Partnership Ghana, Emmanuel Owusu called on all, including the government of Ghana, private entities, and individuals to join hands in the fight against a disease that kills at least three (3) people in the country every day.
